The ancient town of AlUla was established in the 12th century, near the ancient routes of the incense-laden trade caravans, and became an essential resting station on the Hajj route from Damascus to Mecca. Its towering castle, 45 metres high, was built around the 10th century and was a watchtower and defence fortress for the town’s wall, which included 14 gates. It is 22 kilometres from Mada’in Saleh.
